September 2007, Hitchcock Press received three awards from the Printing Industries of New England. All the entries were letterpress printed at Hitchcock Press. They showcase the unique quality attained by the impression left on paper by letterpress printing; a quality that cannot be achieved by any other printing method.

The Award of Excellence is given in recognition of superb craftsmanship in the creation, design and production of top quality printed materials.

Entry: Nantucket’s Brant Point Lighthouse

This limited edition 10” x 13” print was letterpressed on Archival Montval paper in black ink and four values of gray ink. It was hand fed on a Vandercook Universal III cylinder letterpress using magnesium plates. The art was imaged on a digital camera and computer manipulated to yield the desired six solid grayscale values. The magnesium engraved plate was made from the grayscale separations.

The Premier Print Award goes to those firms who demonstrate a unique ability to create visual masterpieces chosen from thousands of entries. Each represents the unique partnership between designer and printer, need and creativity, technology and craft.

Guy Gaulin who began his long Graphic Arts career as a letterpress printer when the craft flourished. This note card is letterpressed in black and three values of gray ink on Montval mould paper.
